What is Microcurrent?
Microcurrent is low-volt, pulsed current in millionths of an ampere. By comparison, transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) produces current in milliamps, 1000 times greater than microcurrent. The cells in our bodies make current in microamps, so the current produced by microcurrent is very compatible with cellular energy. Microcurrent's small size makes it possible to address the cellular need for energy to repair damaged or injured tissues.

Microcurrent therapy has the ability to relieve pain and inflammation, increase the rate of wound healing, increase protein synthesis, stimulate the regeneration of injured tissue, stimulate lymphatic flow, relieve myofacial trigger points and change scar tissue.

Microcurrent electro-physiotherapy is based on neutralizing and eliminating disease radiations using micro doses of electrical stimulation. The effect is claimed to be achieved through neutralizing those frequencies that are alleged to be incorrect for the damaged or affected tissues. Microcurrent therapy introduces a mild electrical current into an area of damaged soft tissue. The introduced current is believed to enhance the healing process underway in that same tissue.

What is the scientific basis for microcurrent?
All life forms produce an electrical charge that can be scientifically measured. Every cell produces an electrical charge. The mitochondria in every cell produces a biochemical called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

The production of this bio-chemical energy in each cell makes current in microamps. The bio-electricity produced in the cells flows through tissues, initiating biochemical reactions and cellular repair.

Traumatized and diseased tissue affects the electrical potential of the damaged tissue. This injured area has a higher electrical resistance than the surrounding tissue. This decreases electrical conductance through the injured area, and decreases cellular capacitance, leading to inflammation and impairment of the healing process. When microcurrent is applied to the damaged and/or inflamed tissues, resistance is reduced, allowing bio-electricity to flow through and reestablish normal function. Microcurrent applied to injured tissue supports the natural current flow in the tissue, allowing cells in the traumatized area to regain their capacitance. This process helps to initiate and perpetuate the many biochemical reactions that occur in healing.

How long has microcurrent been used?
Microcurrent dates back to the early 1900's and Dr. Albert Abrams who was the first physician to use calibrated instruments capable of detecting the radiations of living tissue. Dr. Abrams concluded that all matter radiates electromagnetic energy and that the characteristics of the radiations from any type of matter depend upon the molecular constituents of the material. Dr. Abrams proved that the radiations emitted by the different organs of living tissues can be detected, selectively differentiated and the amplitudes measured. Dr. Abrams became convinced that the frequencies involved were radio waves and that electronic equipment could be developed to neutralize and eliminate disease radiations.

Microcurrent has been used successfully for over thirty years in the treatment of pain management and injury recovery. Typically used in professional sports to facilitate healing of damaged tissue, microcurrent stimulates lymphatic movement, blood circulation and cellular metabolism in compromised areas of injury, thereby delivering the needed tools for healing. In addition to treating pain, microcurrent has a capacity for stimulating any healing process. Thus the applications for using microcurrent are endless.

How does microcurrent work?
Microcurrent increases the production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the body's chemical energy, by up to 500%. Thus, the body uses the microcurrent energy to increase its own energy production. Microcurrent can be set and applied at frequencies that match the radiations emitted by the different tissues and organs of the body

Frequency, like potency in Homeopathy, works on the principle of biologic resonance. A singer can shatter a glass when the note resonates with the crystal structure of the glass. Microcurrent frequencies and homeopathic potency seem to be able to resonate with biologic tissue and change the structure of the tissue when the frequency/potency matches.
Homeopathy works much in the same manner. Homeopathy involves selecting specific frequencies of a specific homeopathic remedy to obtain the desired biological or emotional change within that patient. Microcurrent therapy involves selecting specific frequencies of radio waves to obtain a desired change in the patient.

How is microcurrent applied?
Microcurrent is delivered by a probe, dermatrode pads, special gloves and/or by a small broadcast antenna. All applications are non-invasive.
A moistened Q-tip is inserted into the probe that is used for administering electro-acupuncture (the stimulation of acupuncture points and meridian channels without needles). The sticky pads (dermatrodes) are applied directly onto the skin (like a bandage) and deliver the microcurrent frequencies to the whole body (not just muscles). The special gloves work like the dermatrodes but are typically used when working with connective tissue and/or joints. The frequencies used with the pads, gloves and broadcast antenna are thought to work like electronic homeopathy.

Will I feel the microcurrent stimulation?
No, microcurrent is sub-sensory. The electrical charge produced by microcurrent is approximately the same level as what the cells in our body normally produce. The current is so low it does not stimulate sensory nerves. Typically less than 600 microamps, there is no discomfort or even sensation during application.

How does microcurrent differ from other electrical stimulation therapy?
Traditional electrical charges placed on the body (such as those used in TENS devices) will travel around the traumatized cells. A smaller current - one that can penetrate the cell - can restore a more normal physiological state to the damaged cells. While traditional electrical stimulation provides benefit for pain and some tissue repair, research suggests that smaller microcurrent electrical charges are more helpful in initiating and perpetuating the numerous electrical chemical reactions in the healing and repair process.

Microcurrent instruments are approved under the general class of transcutaneous nerve stimulation (TENS) devices even though microcurrent is 1000 times less current than TENS devices. Traditional electro-stimulation devices produce current that stimulate sensory nerves where applied to the skin or acupuncture needles. Microcurrent is sub-sensory and painless.

Are there any side effects to using microcurrent?
Microcurrent changes muscle tissue, softens scar tissue, and stimulates cellular metabolism with the effect of releasing long stored waste products. Some patients have a detoxification reaction after microcurrent therapy. The reaction is similar to detoxification symptoms experienced during homotoxicology and after a massage. The side effects can include nausea, fatigue, drowsiness, a temporary increase in pain, a skin eruption/rash and/or a flu-like feeling. The side effects usually start within 24 to 48 hours after treatment and may last from 4 to 24 hours. There have been no lasting adverse reactions reported.

Microcurrent has a history of being very safe. If detox symptoms are unpleasant or last more than 24 hours, additional treatment and/or using appropriate acute care homeopathic remedies can help facilitate the detoxification process.

What types of electrical stimulation devices do you use?
I use three types of medical devices in my practice: M.E.N.S.
Microcurrent Therapy (by Monad Corporation), Frequency Specific Microcurrent (by Precision Distributing and Bio-Therapeutic Computers), and Meridian Stress Assessment (by BioMeridian). All are approved and regulated by the FDA and are classified as TENS devices and/or Class IIa medical devices.

The MENS-O-MATIC IV (Microcurrent Electrical Neuromuscular Stimulation) is an electro-acupuncture (EA) device that I use primarily to locate and stimulate acupuncture points and perform meridian stress assessment profiles. It is also used for physiotherapy, specifically to reduce swelling/inflammation and pain. For more information,

The PrecisionMicro™ (Precision Pro) and the FSM Auto-Care (Bio-Therapeutic Computers) units are FDA approved as a physical therapy modality for the treatment of pain from any cause whether of acute onset or of chronic duration. These frequency specific microcurrent devices utilize hundreds of frequencies within the range of .01 to 999 Hz with varying intensities of 20 to 600 micramps (sub-sensory to nerve firing).

With FSM, specific frequencies are chosen for therapy to match the frequencies of the tissue disruptions. For more information,

The BioMeridian MSAS Professional (BioMeridian Corporation) is a sophisticated computerized meridian stress assessment profiling system that uses an FDA approved non-invasive bio-energetic device to measure the patient's energy at specific meridian points. The data from the BioMeridian profiling system assists me in determining what major systems and organs of the body are stressed or weakened as well as what homotoxicological phases are potentially in process and what symptoms may be present within the identified phase. In addition to performing diagnostic measurements, the BioMeridian system can help bring the patient's energetic disturbances back into balance because it functions like other physio-therapy and electrical stimulation devices, delivering specific vibrational frequencies to the patient. The BioMeridian MSAS Professional has an extensive library of frequency listings associated with anatomy, physiology, chemistry, biology, nutrition and pharmacology that helps me create the optimal homeopathic protocol for the patient.

What is Meridian Stress Assessment testing?
Meridian stress assessment testing (MSA) is a profiling system that originated in Japan and uses FDA approved non-invasive bio-energetic medical devices to measure the energy (galvanic skin response) at specific meridian points. It is similar to ultrasonic diagnostic equipment. The data from the meridian assessment chart assists me in determining the patient's level of vitality, the relative excess or deficient energy in each body system and directs me to probably areas of imbalance. It shows what organs are stressed or deficient along with the status of functional indicators such as cardiac, liver, adrenal glands, the renal system and digestion. Meridian assessment helps me understand how well the patient's immune system is functioning and to what extent non-specific immune functions are engaged. The meridian assessment provides a baseline reading from which to gauge progress during the course of treatment.
